Anthony Nolan is a UK-based charity supporting patients before, during and after stem cell transplant or CAR T-cell therapy. They do this through recruiting stem cell donors via the stem cell register, carrying out ground-breaking research to improve survival rates and post-transplant life and by providing the best post-transplant care for patients.
Anthony Nolan has always been focused on matching stem cell donors with patients with blood cancer and blood disorders, helping improve outcomes and quality of life for these patients. They work with doctors, nurses, clinical scientists and medical professionals every single day, all of whom have very limited time for training on a new digital platform. They just need to learn what they need to do and get on with it, without wasting time on convoluted processes.
Transforming the way Anthony Nolan works with UK transplant centres
In 2023, Anthony Nolan launched a new digital platform called AN Connect. It was designed to remove outdated manual processes and streamline communications throughout the stem cell transplant journey, freeing up more time for medical professionals to focus on patients, and helping clinical scientists find the best possible match.
Anthony Nolan recognised that this was a big change and that they would need to deliver comprehensive training to ensure people were fully supported throughout the change. They also knew that the people they would be rolling AN Connect out to were very busy and located at transplant centres all over the UK. Running in-person training sessions would be expensive and difficult to schedule, so they started the search for an LMS to make training more accessible and streamlined.
A digital learning platform for a digital solution
Anthony Nolan needed a simple, intuitive LMS to meet the needs of busy medical professionals, and 5app was the perfect fit for this important extended enterprise systems training project.
While the AN Connect User Manual is a vital resource for Anthony Nolan, having a hard copy makes it tricky to find information quickly. With 5app, Anthony Nolan was able to split the manual into bite-sized sections, each of which has been uploaded into themed playlists to help medical professionals find out how to log in to AN Connect, search for patients, submit requests and more.

Breaking the manual down into shorter sections means that medical professionals can now easily search on 5app to find what they need, without having to trawl through all 65 pages of the paper document!
This important information is now available on-demand via the extended enterprise LMS, meaning medical staff who don’t work standard office hours can always access what they need.
Big wins from a simple solution

It’s safe to say that since its launch in December 2023, Anthony Nolan’s 5app LMS has been a great success.
There are now 414 platform users, based across 33 transplant centres across the UK, with an average of 17.6 asset opens per user. 5app makes it easy for Anthony Nolan to see who is engaging with the content at each transplant centre, as well as enabling them to share the right content with the right people based on what they need to know to use AN Connect.
The LMS is already saving Anthony Nolan significant time and money by reducing the need for face-to-face training – not only to roll out this new product, but also as they continue to develop it in the future. It’s also quick and easy for Anthony Nolan to update information in the digital format, without having to constantly reprint and redistribute paper copies, making this a highly sustainable initiative.
What’s next?
For a charity like Anthony Nolan, the focus will always be on providing the best possible support for patients, and better training plays a crucial role in this.
With this in mind, Anthony Nolan is planning on creating quick-start guides and bite-sized videos to show medical professionals how to complete tasks on AN Connect, as well as making further enhancements to make content more accessible and searchable.
