Invest in AI. Automate processes. Modernise systems. Move faster. And to be clear, all of that still matters. But there is a growing risk that organisations are focusing so heavily on technical capability that they are overlooking the very thing that determines whether transformation succeeds or fails: human skills. The fact is that many leadership challenges aren’t technology problems – they’re soft skill problems.   ## The leadership skills crisis nobody wants to talk about When organisations struggle with change, the root cause is rarely a lack of technology. More often, it's a failure to communicate a vision, build trust, manage uncertainty or bring people along on the journey. There is no one tool that will transform a business, but a lack of leadership soft skills will always get in the way of business performance. In the [LinkedIn 2025 Workplace Learning Report](https://business.linkedin.com/learn/resources/workplace-learning-report), nearly half (49%) of learning and talent leaders said their executives are concerned employees lack the skills needed to execute business strategy. In the UK, that figure rises to 57%. The report also highlights adaptability and leadership development as critical priorities for organisations looking to remain competitive. That's a major warning sign. So why are so many businesses pumping billions into AI and digital transformation, yet struggling with fundamental leadership skills like communication, coaching and strategic vision?   ## AI is making human skills more valuable, not less One of the biggest misconceptions about AI is that technical skills will become the only skills that matter. I believe the opposite is true. The [World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025](https://www.weforum.org/publications/the-future-of-jobs-report-2025/) identifies leadership and social influence, resilience, flexibility, agility, curiosity and lifelong learning among the fastest-growing skills for the future workforce. These sit alongside AI and technical capabilities, not beneath them. As AI takes over routine tasks, the uniquely human aspects of leadership become more important. AI isn’t going to be making critical business decisions, managing organisation-wide change management programmes or brokering huge deals anytime soon, so employees still want and need leaders who can communicate clearly, navigate ambiguity and create psychological safety. AI can generate answers. It cannot create trust. That’s where soft skills come in.   ## The most successful leaders combine technical and human intelligence We've entered an era where leadership is becoming a blend of technical intelligence and emotional intelligence. The leaders who thrive won't necessarily be the ones with the deepest technical expertise, or the most AI experience, or the ability to code a solution from scratch. They'll be the ones who can translate complexity into clarity, help teams adapt to change and create environments where people can perform at their best – all alongside the [AI tools](https://5app.com/resources/the-best-ai-tools-for-small-businesses) they’ve taken the time to thoroughly vet and understand, even if they’re not using them first-hand every day. Recent research continues to show strong links between emotional intelligence, team effectiveness, motivation and leadership performance. Leaders who demonstrate soft skills like empathy, self-awareness and relationship building are consistently viewed as more effective at building trust and engagement. Even emerging research on leading AI-enabled teams suggests that successful leaders distinguish themselves through behaviours such as asking questions, encouraging participation and demonstrating social intelligence. Even though it’s related to AI, these are firmly human skills, and they’re a must for teams looking to level up across the board.   ## Why organisations need to rethink leadership development For many organisations, leadership development still focuses heavily on operational management and technical competence – particularly AI right now. Those skills remain important, but they’re not the only skills that matter. I would argue that soft skills rank above operational and technical skills for great managers. Employees want to work for leaders who coach rather than command, influence rather than instruct and guide them deftly through constant change. The technical skills are still valuable, but the best leaders are focusing on soft skills such as: - [Communication](https://5app.com/resources/the-art-of-great-workplace-communication) - Emotional intelligence - Adaptability - Critical thinking - [Coaching](https://5app.com/resources/the-foolproof-guide-to-improving-your-coaching-skills) and mentoring - Relationship building - [Change management](https://5app.com/resources/how-to-get-better-at-change-management) The organisations that treat these capabilities as ‘nice to haves’ may find themselves with advanced technology but limited ability to realise its value. Flashy tools and technology won’t have the impact CEOs want if these initiatives are being delivered by ineffective leaders.   ## Leadership has always been a human challenge Technology will continue to evolve. AI capabilities will continue to expand. But the fundamental challenge of leadership remains unchanged: helping people achieve more together than they could alone. That's why soft skills aren’t soft at all. In 2026, where automation reigns supreme, soft skills may be the hardest skills to develop, the most difficult to replicate and perhaps the greatest competitive advantage a leader can possess. The future of leadership won't be defined by who uses the most AI.
