How to use AI for personalised learning

If you’ve worked in this industry for any length of time in the last 20 years, you’ll know that personalised learning has long been on the L&D agenda. Learning isn’t a one-size-fits-all activity, and the best learning teams take the time to understand what motivates, engages and inspires their employees to craft a tailored learning programme that drives real success.

In the last couple of years, AI has joined the party in a big way. The potential of AI for personalised learning is huge – after all, AI can often spot trends before humans and pick up on subtleties in your learners’ activity and behaviour that might be easy to miss, giving you much more data and guidance to develop even more personalised learning.

But developing personalised learning alone can be overwhelming enough – add AI into the mix, and it’s understandable that many L&D professionals feel totally lost. We know it’s overwhelming, which is why we’re sharing some of the best ways small businesses can embrace AI for personalised learning – absolutely no coding required.

AI tutor agents for learning support

AI tutor agents are one of the best ways to use AI for personalised learning. After all, every single one of your learners will have their own goals, interests and ways of learning, so slapping a one-size-fits-all elearning course on your LMS and expecting world-changing results is obviously unrealistic.

An AI agent can interact with every learner to help them find the right content, and it also helps to relieve some of the burden on the L&D team. Instead of going to the L&D team to ask where to find a piece of content, learners can get those answers immediately within the LMS, reducing barriers to learning and keeping everything moving quickly.

Personalised learning paths

One of the things AI is great for is creating personalised learning paths. AI can take everything it knows about the learner, whether that’s their current role, previous learning activity or preferred topics, and build a tailored learning path to guide the learner through the most suitable content.

AI-driven personalised learning paths are a brilliant way to customise the learning experience with minimal intervention needed – if you have an LMS and a bunch of content, AI can take it from there. Asking L&D to do this manually would take hours per learner, whereas AI-generated learning paths can be created in seconds, making this a great timesaver.

AI-powered content recommendations

If you’re not quite ready for full AI-generated learning paths, you could start smaller with AI-powered content recommendations. That way, you can dip your toe in the water with a small ‘Suggested for you’ module in your LMS, which recommends useful or interesting content for each learner, without needing to commit to full learning paths straight away.

One of the benefits of using AI for personalised learning is that AI can often get to know our learners better than we can, much faster. It can pick up on things our learners may not even know they need themselves yet, accelerating the learning process and giving them what they need, right when they need it.

Content translation and localisation

A big advantage of personalised learning is the fact that you can create content that aligns with each learner’s individual needs – and a big part of that centres around language. Unless absolutely every person at your company has the same native language, it’s likely at least some of your people would benefit from accessing learning in their own first language.

AI is very useful for translating and localising content, helping you personalise the learning experience and achieve better results. By this, we don’t just mean running an elearning transcript through Google Translate – AI translation tools have come on leaps and bounds, and can handle everything from the straightforward text translation to translating video, audio and image-based content to localising your content for different geographic audiences. Just don’t forget to ask a native human speaker to double check the AI output!

AI content creation

Creating the right content for each learner is a huge part of the learning personalisation process. Personalisation can be as simple as adding a learner’s first name to their LMS homepage (‘Welcome, Alex!’), or as complex as generating an entirely unique suite of learning content tailored to each learner’s goals and preferences.

AI content creation is brilliant for producing vast amounts of personalised learning content at scale. With AI, your learning programmes can automatically adapt to the needs of each learner based on their experience, role, location, career goals and interests, which both improves their learning experience and helps you get the best out of every single employee. Tailoring your learning content manually would be a huge drain on your time and resource, whereas AI can do it all in seconds, making it a real secret weapon for small business L&D teams.
